Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
