The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
